Magic the Gathering (MtG) - pierwsza i najlepiej znana na świecie kolekcjonerska gra karciana. Wymyślona przez matematyka, Richarda Garfielda, pojawiła się latem 1993 roku i szybko stała sie wielkim sukcesem.

Karty dzielą się na pięć "kręgów" magii symblizowanych kolorami. Biały to domena prawa, porządku i niewinności. Niebieski jest kolorem wody, powietrza, kontroli nad umysłem. Czarny to magia śmierci, nieumarłych i zła. Czerwony symbolizuje ogień, ziemię, wojnę i chaos. Zielony to kolor natury, rozwoju i życia. Dodatkowo są jeszcze karty zwane artefaktami, które są bezkolorowe (colorless) i mogą być używane w każdym decku.

Osobną kategorię stanowią lądy. To z nich czerpie sie "manę" potrzebną do rzucania czarów. Istnieje pięć podstawowych rodzajów lądów podstawowych (basic land). Każdy z nich daje manę jednego z pięciu kolorów: równiny (plains) dają białą mane, wyspy (island) niebieską, bagna (swamp) czarną, góry (mountain) czerwoną i lasy (forest) zieloną.

Każdy zaczyna grę posiadając 20 punktów życia. Celem gry jest sprowadzene życia przeciwnika do 0 punktów zagrywając czary, wystawiając stwory które służą do atakowania przeciwnika i obrony przed jego stworami itp. Przegrywasz również gdy twoja talia - biblioteka (library) wyczerpie się.
